APPLICATION NOTE – Lake Oswego, OR Lift Station

ODOR CONTROL – “It’s not just odors you need to consider”

When deciding on the most appropriate and cost effective odor control technology for your specific application, there are many aspects that must be taken into account to get the best solution. Most of the time it is based on costs and effectiveness. In some cases however, there are other challenges that must be over come. This is the case with the City of Lake Oswego, OR – Palisades Terrace Lift Station.

As shown in the following pictures, the site had many obstacles. The obvious one was the fact that the system was to be placed in an underground lift station vault in the driveway outside the front door of a multi-million dollar home located on the shores of Lake Oswego. The lift station was built many years ago before the house was constructed and was in need of upgrading. This presented design considerations that included odor treatment effectiveness, size, noise, aesthetics, and long-term maintenance.

The HAWK Radial Flow Odor Control System™ was chosen for this application due to its ability to meet all of these needs. The face velocity of HAWK radial flow system allows it to have a much smaller footprint than an up-flow packed bed system. Also, the radial flow kinetics produces lower pressure drop through the media bed, which results in a lower horsepower motor and smaller fan to be used. This will cause much lower electrical costs and reduced noise levels.

As shown, the system fit nicely into the pre-existing space that could not be changed. The system is comprised of HAWK adsorber canister, flexible ductwork, damper, and FRP fan with sound enclosure. This system can handle up to 500 cfm with concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and organic orders up to 50 ppm.

The HAWK line comes in either stand-alone canisters or complete skid mounted systems to fit your specific project needs. These systems are built of FRP with premium resin and high manufacturing standards for long-term, maintenance free operation. The systems can handle up to 20,000 cfm per canister and comes in seven standard sizes, based on airflow and treatment needs.

The HAWK utilizes radial flow operation as shown. This allows much lower pressure drop, in a smaller footprint, than standard up flow packed bed. The system also eliminates the problem of bed expansion and media fluidization that causes media fragmentation and increased pressure drop.

The graph below shows the relative pressure drop with airflow comparison between HAWK radial systems and standard up flow packed bed systems.

The resulting reduced pressure drop allows for lower horsepower motors than can have considerable savings over time as shown below.
